本故事描写了传统农民企业家麦志行在改革的大潮中，在情与理、新与旧冲突中的痛苦挣扎与蜕变过程。林天明这个颇受麦志行器重的年轻人在推行改革时内外交困，未来老丈人陈坤的误会、老臣子等人的打击和报复、竞争对手的强烈攻势，使他渐渐冷静成熟起来，在麦的支持下逐步挑起了大梁……剧中还表现了麦志行与舒默、罗玲三人之间微妙的情感关系以及几对年轻的人爱情故事。一波三折，最后陷入低谷的鸿星集团在麦志行与林天明的带领下，能否再次风生水起？
相对世界在 2017年4月28日和5月5日分别播出前篇和后篇，故事为一个序章。
