上世纪20年代末，上海百货巨子易氏家族遭遇承继危机，易兴华因独子易钟杰弃商从医，被迫召回长女钟灵、次女钟玉、幼女钟秀。钟灵乃名门淑女，典雅文静。钟玉由南洋巨贾外祖抚养，精明能干。钟秀留学美国，浪漫天真。三位千金生母 不同、脾性不投、成长环境迥异，为继承星华百货，三人各出奇招，争执不休。易兴华未料三凤还巢引发轩然大波，恐伤及骨肉之情，迟迟无法选定最终继承人，反令三女间误会重重、各奔东西。上海“孤岛”时期，易兴华把握时机，星华百货空前繁盛，经营所得泰半赈济上海灾民。但好景不长，1941年日寇侵占上海，易兴华因支援抗日爱国活动、坚拒日寇拉拢而遇害，星华百货失去掌舵人，又遭遇连番重创，陷入风雨飘摇之中。易氏子女为实现父亲实业兴国的夙愿，终能团结一致，共度时艰。
1976年的某知青点，酷爱拉小提琴的知青苏扬与郑向东热恋，却因为误会和意外而失之交臂。一直暗恋苏扬的司梦南趁机接近苏扬，两人走到了一起，却又屡次猜疑、背叛苏扬。郑向东和同学孙千雅一起复习准备高考，孙千雅对郑向东情愫暗生。苏扬为了照顾生病的父亲而放弃了大学之路，但她在知青点学到的缝纫手艺和服装设计上的天赋为她打开了另一扇通向梦想的大门。苏扬不知道当年以为夭折的儿子郑好已经被郑家养大成人。司梦南嫉妒心作祟，处处针对郑向东。饱经磨难和坎坷，苏扬在服装界取得了巨大的成功。苏扬终于知道了郑好的身世，孙千雅却身患重病，苏扬选择让孩子永远认孙千雅为妈妈。经历了一切之后，当年意气风发的知青们感受到了岁月和人性的洗礼。
抗日战争末期，厦门的一天黄昏，医学院学生何美纪正准备回校，在桥上遇到日军轰炸，急忙躲闪间，来自马来西亚的华侨实习生林志祥奋不顾身地上前紧紧抱住美纪，自己却被炮弹熏得满脸黑烟，志祥和美纪在等待轰炸过去的时光中互生情愫。他们相约，如果能躲过这场轰炸，明晚会在初次相逢的桥上约会。志祥所就读的学校突然宣布撤离，志祥因此没能赴晚上与美纪的约会。志祥撤离来到桥边时，取下自己胸前的名牌，放在桥边。晚上美纪到来看到志祥的名牌上沾满了血迹，心情非常难过，她担心着志祥的生死。战争结束后，在拥挤的火车战，美纪重遇志祥，看到志祥还活着，美纪心里又喜又忧，因为虽然她心里一直放不下志祥，但一切都已物换星移，人事全非，战争带给这对恋人却是永远的遗憾。
