Application layer attacks use more sophisticated mechanisms to achieve hacker targets. Application layer attacks do not use traffic or sessions to flood the network, but slowly deplete resources on the application layer for specific applications/services. Application layer attacks are very effective at low traffic rates. From a protocol point of view, the traffic involved in the attacks may be legitimate.
