1934年，苏区红军进行战略转移前夕，去南昌探亲的水葱意外卷入一场对南昌地下党的阴谋屠杀。杀戮中，水葱被侦查员陈子明所救，而她的老公徐广轩被同志掩护，也成了这场阴谋中活下来的人。回到中央苏区，专办此案的潘秀山一口咬定徐广轩是贪生怕死的叛徒，幸亏陈子明带回铁证，从枪口下救出徐广轩，原来潘秀山才是真正的叛徒。第五次反围剿开始，红军迅速转移，徐广轩临危受命，要赶赴湘江战场，夫妻别过。掉队的水葱与陈子明决定追赶大部队。一路上，他们误入土匪窝、遭遇当地军阀、水葱女儿被抓，历经重重危险。千钧一发时刻，徐广轩带团四渡赤水，兵临城下，与军阀郭孝峰对峙，经过一番激烈较量，徐广轩救下妻女，一家团聚，最后率领部队，克服无数艰难险阻，终于到达陕北吴起。
