1901年八国联军占据北京，清政府为了议和答应为德国钦差克林德修一座牌坊，茂兴营造厂百般推脱，而掌门人蒯鹤年为救京城百姓，为保住工匠手艺的传承最终舍身取义，一人忍辱负重修好了牌坊，在牌坊落成之日自尽。
